FILL LEVEL MEASUREMENT

Fill level measurement
For non-transparent containers, fill level detection using conventional methods is extremely limited. For example, cans of spray paint, oil canisters, and many other application possibilities.
Example – a can of spray paint: The usual acrylic lacquers or artificial resin lacquers, and even aerosol cans with two components (binder and hardener) can be completely checked for proper fill level. This is not easily possible using other technologies.
Results: Improved monitoring of the individual production steps, greater customer satisfaction, evidenced by a lower complaint rate.
Here we present two examples where this type of fill-level monitoring of cans is implemented. They give you an idea of the performance capacity of our inspection systems. If these processes are also possibilities for you, then talk to our experts. Together we will develop an optimised concept tailored to your situation.
EXAMPLE: FOOD INDUSTRY
Example: FOOD INdustry
For food products in particular, product prices and quantities are often very high. Deviations that result in giveaways, together with the effects cited above, can quickly erode profit.
However, the specific fill level can be determined quickly, safely, without contact, and at extremely high throughput, almost completely independent of the shape of the container or the contents. This also applies to solid contents, such as flour or pulses.
Such independence also makes it possible to integrate additional functions; examples include:
- Material-independent foreign object detection
- Detection of serial defects (e.g. a defective batch of packaging)
- Presence and seat of the closure
- Inspection of the labelling

Correct fill level quantities determine the quality of products. For example, this applies to containers for 2-component products. In this case, it is essential to comply with precise fill quantities to ensure the product quality of the two-component mix. Only compliance with the specific correct mixing ratio guarantees a faultless and lasting end product.
Special approaches are required to separately determine the respective fill level of materials inside non-transparent containers. An alternative method for determining fill levels (by weight, for instance) is not possible, nor can it ensure the quality of the end product.
IMS X-ray technologies offer solutions, precisely tailored to your needs, for inspecting substances having different properties (liquids and solids) inside one package. The type of packaging is of little importance; it can be plastic, metal or some other material. Whether it’s a tube of toothpaste or a canister, we can determine the various contents.
- Tailored to your application
- Simultaneous inspection of multiple chambers
- Additional quality monitoring (is the packaging intact?)
- Fast inspection times/high product throughput
